Meet our founders

Pragmatic was founded by our CEO, Susan Westwater, and COO, Scot Westwater. Fueled by curiosity and a love of problem-solving, they combined their agency and corporate experience and know-how to create a consultancy that advises the world's most innovative brands that want to capitalize on the incredible opportunity Voice and conversational AI represent.

Susan Westwater

CEO and Co-founder

Susan advises the world’s most innovative brands that want to capitalize on the incredible opportunity Voice and conversational AI represent. Combining the strategic marketing and brand knowledge she gained from decades at top tier agencies such as Leo Burnett and working in corporate, Susan helps clients expand their brands into conversational experiences to solve marketing and customer experience problems.  Susan has presented and authored a number of talks, workshops, articles, research papers, and ebooks focused on the role Voice, conversational AI, and other emerging technologies like the metaverse, play in marketing and business strategy. She is an Ambassador of the Open Voice Network, an instructor at the AI Academy for Marketers. Susan is co-author of Voice Strategy: Creating Useful and Usable Voice Experiences (which was a #1 Release on Amazon) and is a co-author of Voice Marketing (publishing in 2023).

Scot Westwater

CCO and Co-founder

Scot is a Voice technology expert who helps clients improve their marketing and customer experience. He leverages his 24+ years of design, UX, and digital strategy to create effective voice experiences. Along with his wife Susan, he co-wrote Voice Strategy: Creating Useful and Usable Voice Experiences and will be launching a new book, Voice Marketing in summer 2023. Scot has spoken at industry events like SEM Rush World Marketing Day, Project Voice, VOICE Global, and VOICE22.  In addition, he enjoys giving guest lectures for masters level marketing and HCI classes. He's an Ambassador for the Open Voice Network and an instructor for the Marketing AI Institute.

Why we started Pragmatic

Throughout our careers, we have witnessed significant shifts in marketing communications, driven by changes in consumer behavior and technological advancements. The late 90s saw the transition from traditional to digital marketing, fueled by the emergence of the consumer internet. In the mid-2000s, social media platforms transformed how people interacted with each other and brands, necessitating a new approach to promoting products. By 2013, mobile apps had taken the world by storm, once again revolutionizing how consumers engaged with brands. Having observed these three paradigm shifts in consumer behavior, we immediately recognized the potential of voice-activated assistants like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri to provide consumers with faster, more efficient access to information. We knew we couldn't let this opportunity pass by, as it represented yet another game-changing moment in the evolution of marketing communications.

In 2017, we founded Pragmatic, a consultancy specializing in Conversational AI and Voice technology. Working closely with brands, our mission is to discover ways of incorporating conversational interfaces into the customer experience, providing support throughout their journeys. Over the years, we have gained extensive knowledge and insight into the development of the internet, starting from its beginnings in the late 1990s to the rise of social media in the mid-2000s, and the introduction of mobile technology in 2013. These experiences gave us the clarity to recognize the incredible potential of AI to help brands succeed.
